Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 5: Simon Said (SPOILER BLOG)

For some reason, I feel like I should care more about this episode, and I just don’t. I don’t know why. I think the premise is interesting: more of Azazel’s “special children” and all that. I like Andy... a lot. It’s so rare we get a character who has powers and doesn’t use them for evil. Granted, he doesn’t exactly use them for good, either, but that makes him such a real character to me. He doesn’t go out of his way to save anyone using his powers; he just gets what he wants and lives his simple life.

I guess I’m just getting impatient. It seemed like things were happening so fast in Season 1, and now I’m tired of the brothers trying to solve the mystery. I just want them to figure it out so they can kill Azazel. I might also just be hellishly anticipating Season 4. I MISS CAS, OKAY? I’m also getting antsy about Dean keeping the secret about Sam much longer. Ellen said it best: no secrets or half-truths. They just lead to bad things.

Something interesting looking forward: I can’t believe that Sam ever goes dark side, considering how worried he is about it right now. He’s so scared that he’s a killer and that Azazel has somehow made him this way. Granted, he never really becomes a killer, just a demon-blood-addict, but still. When I think about how far Sam still has to go in his journey... whoo. I get goosebumps.

The only other thing I can think of mentioning in this blog is that I love Jo and Ellen. I honestly do. They are just the best. Ellen is like the mother they never had already, bless her. And Jo’s crush on Dean is practically tangible. It’s so precious. I would be like that around Dean, too. I’d be playing REO Speedwagon like a boss. Which leads me to my second favorite quote of the episode:

Dean: REO Speedwagon?
Jo: Damn right, REO. Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart.
Dean: He sings it from the hair. There’s a difference.

I love the Roadhouse, as well. I’ve said it before; I just think the hunter community is so cool. I also like to imagine in my headcanon that everybody in that bar knows who they are, so when they stroll in, everybody’s like, “Yeah, those are the Winchesters.”

My absolute favorite line of the episode is, of course, when Andy is mind-controlling the guy in the records room and says, “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for...” and Dean cracks up. Seriously, when did Dean find the time to watch all these movies he keeps referencing?

Also, Dr. Badass. That is all.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 4: Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things

God, no, they shouldn’t. I’m terrified already. Excellent.

Never cry when you’re that upset. Nothing good will come of it, honestly. See? You stupid bitch, you crashed because you weren’t paying attention and you were upset and you were crying and now you’re dead.

I didn’t mean that ‘stupid bitch’ comment, honestly. Gah. I just get frustrated when people drive when they’re upset.

Going to visit Mary’s grave. Uh, all right, I guess. That’s really...nice. Oh. He’s taking John’s dog tags with him. Oh, okay. I understand. That’s cool, then. I take back my suspicion behind your motives, Sammy.

What’s up with this dead-looking tree? It’s hollow? That’s kind of what it sounded like. That does not seem good. What the...a dead circle in the grass? Yeah, never good. Everything in that circle is dead?

Dean, I thought you were being all nice to Angela’s dad, but you’re not trying to comfort him, you’re trying to get information out of him. But you’re hurting. You’re hurting so badly. My creys.

Well, duh, Sammy.  It is about Mary and John’s death and Mary’s grave. No shit, Sherlock.

What did Angela see in the road that made her scream? And why did her ex boyfriend’s plant suddenly die? I hate shit like this. Also, why is he watching their home movies. In my opinion, I’d be WAY too freaked for any of that.

He saw her in the reflection of the TV? And she killed him. What am I missing here? I’m missing something, I know I am. I just don’t know what.

Making up names on the fly? Nice one, Dean.

Could it be a reaper? I mean, maybe not, but they can take on any shape they want, right? That’s probably not right, but Matt was seeing her everywhere before he died. There has to be an explanation for that. Ugh, I just don’t know what I’m missing. Is it just the whole “unholy ground” thing? I hate not even having a guess.

Casa Erotica IV? Sam, you’re ridiculous. I love you so much. “Awkward.”

Sam I could see as a grief counselor, but Dean? No way. Sorry, Dean.

Oh, they aren’t going to find a body in there, are they? Called it. CALLED. IT. And now Neil is gonna die. But they...kissed? What? After she said she missed him? Holy Mother of...what in the world is going on? Neil’s trying necromancy on Angela? I don’t think the dad is in on it. Nah, it’s Neil.

“Haven’t you seen Pet Semetery?” Dean, you’re ridiculous. Your pop culture references are awesome.

Woah. I don’t know what I would have to feel for someone in order to try necromancy to bring them back to be with me. I can’t imagine being so obsessed with someone. I hesitated to say ‘being so in love’ with someone, because Neil’s preoccupation with Angela is definitely more of an obsession.

“It’s your grief counselors. We’ve come to hug!” I’ll take a hug, Dean. ;)

Angela’s roommate Lindsey was the one who Matt cheated on Angela with? Oh, that’s not even cool. Girl, get out of the way. Run away now. Before she wakes up! Too late. Aren’t you glad Sam and Dean were there to save you?

Welp, okay, Neil’s dead. Sam, good on you for not letting her manipulate you, but I think you pissed her off. That was some good aiming and sliding there, Dean. I approve.

I’m not sure I’m really in agreement with Dean’s philosophy that everything dead should stay dead. I mean, yeah, I approve when it’s stuff like this. Bringing people back from the dead would never be a good idea, because you can’t know how they’ll be when they come back (assuming you believe it’s possible). I should have realized that this would hit Dean harder than it would Sam, because he got brought back from dying. He was supposed to be dead, and he’s not. And he feels a connection with Angela, I suppose. Ugh, there’s so much grey area with this, because yeah, Dean should have died, but I think we knew he wouldn’t die. Or that he wouldn’t stay dead, I guess.

I love emotional!Dean. I feel so bad for him, because as much as this affects Sam, he’s pretty much in the dark about a lot of stuff. Dean knows “the truth” about Sam, but he hasn’t told Sam about it. He’s got a lot on his shoulders, and he’s going to protect Sam. That kind of makes me think of what Sam told Bobby about the Impala. “If there’s one working part, it’s worth it.” I’m sure that’s how Dean feels about Sam. If there’s any hope for Sam, it’s worth it.

Random thoughts: Dean has a lot of good one-liners. The girl who plays Angela looks and sounds a bit like Emma Roberts sometimes. Jensen’s eyes are incredibly green in this episode.

Moar, moar!

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 4: Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (SPOILER BLOG)

The funniest thing about this episode to me is the title. I mean, I get it, but there’s an episode coming up (I think it’s only one or two away, actually) that should be called “Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things” and it makes this episode look completely misnamed. This episode should be called “What’s Dead Should Stay Dead” or something like that.

To be completely honest, I kind of forgot what a terror Dean is in this season (or at least these past couple episodes). With everything that happened with Sam and Castiel, I tend to fall into a kind of hero worship when it comes to Dean. But even I can admit that Dean’s been acting horribly. For some reason, Sam has become the incredibly mature one. I don’t know what prompted this: I feel like John’s death could have just made Sam more angry and vengeful. But for some reason this has transferred to Dean.

I suppose we get a reason why in the final scene. It’s funny, I actually just watched a video of the most recent convention where Jensen says that this scene was one his top three hardest scenes to film. I can completely see why. This is a man eaten up with guilt, maybe not completely broken yet, but close. He is trying to accept the fact that if he wasn’t around, his dad would be alive. Actually, it kind of reminds me of “The Lion King” (yes, I just went there). Mufasa’s death was not Simba’s fault, but the fact remains that if Simba wasn’t alive, his dad would be. That’s how I imagine Dean is feeling in this moment.

I actually made a weird sobbing noise when Sam was yelling at Dean outside of the father’s house. He says this, “We’ve already lost Dad. We’ve lost Mom. I’ve lost Jessica. And now I’m going to lose you, too?” I’ll have to be on the lookout for if Dean says something like this to Sam in the later seasons, but in the moment, it reminded me too much of what Dean says to Castiel in the season six finale... something along the lines of, “I’ve lost Lisa, I’ve lost Ben, and now I’ve lost Sam. Don’t make me lose you, too.” I guess it was just a moment where I can recognize how much Dean has grown from the earlier seasons to the later ones.

The most interesting thing about this episode, to me, is that Dean is so preachy about letting dead people stay dead. He is so vehement about the fact that he should have been left to die instead of brought back. However, when it comes to Sam dying, Dean makes deals with demons and sacrifices himself to bring Sam back to life. I don’t know whether it’s because all bets are off when it comes to Sam, or whether Dean doesn’t think he deserves to be saved, but it’s definitely something to think about.

Two favorite moments of this episode: 1) Dean’s “Pretty in Pink” reference. It’s one thing for Dean to talk about “The Shining” or “Silence of the Lambs”, but the Brat Pack? This is why we’re soulmates, Dean. 2) “It’s your grief counselors! We’ve come to hug!”

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 3: Bloodlust (SPOILER BLOG)

I love the way this episode opens with the vampire as the victim. We don’t know it yet, but we’re already sympathizing with the “monster”.

The fact that “Back in Black” is basically the Impala theme song makes me heart happy. I was just air-guitar-ing for that entire scene.

I love the glimpses we get in this episode and the last one of this idea of a hunter community. They go to the Roadhouse, they give each other tips, they share news of recent hunter deaths, etc. I also love the idea that John’s death was like, huge news in the hunter world. I honestly believe that John was one of the greatest hunters of all time and that other hunters looked up to him.

Moving on to Gordon, who (obviously) sucks. I can’t even look at him in this episode without remembering how he died. I think he had one of the most violent deaths on the show and just thinking about it is making me gag so I’ll stop talking about it.

This is definitely one of those “who-is-the-real-monster” episodes. We don’t see a lot of that on the show, probably because the writers want the Winchesters to seem like heroes most of the time, but when you add Gordon to the mix it’s a bit more acceptable to start asking questions about who is in the right. Even though the show is called “Supernatural”, when you think about it, the brothers hunt evil things, not supernatural ones. They hunt the things that hurt and kill people that would have otherwise never been brought to justice because the normal world doesn’t believe in them. It’s not about killing whatever is different.

This never happens, but I am so on Sam’s side in this episode. Dean is being terrible. One, I was so pissed at him during the bar scene after they kill the vampire at the mill. He’s so obviously showing off for Gordon, acting like Sam’s bringing them down. I saw Dean’s face right after he killed the vampire; decapitations aren’t fun for anybody and I don’t believe they’re fun for Dean, as much as he tries to play it off. But now he wants to impress Gordon, show him what a big man he is, act like his little brother is embarrassing him, and it makes me so mad. I hate when people act differently because they’re trying to impress someone or whatever, so Dean is not making me happy in this scene (or this episode in general, really).

Also, I completely agree with what Sam says about Dean trying to replace John with Gordon. Sam and Dean are so different, and Dean doesn’t have any friends. I always get the feeling that Sam is really good at meeting new people and making friends, whereas Dean is not, so I can see how Dean would want to spend time with this man who is so similar to him. It doesn’t excuse his god-awful behavior, but it makes it a bit easier to understand.

Dean’s clear discomfort at the end of the episode was so upsetting when you think about what he knows. His father told him that he was going to have to kill his brother, and I’m sure now Dean is wondering whether he’ll have to do so just because Sam is different. Was John one of those hunters who would have looked at Sam, said, “Yes, that’s a monster” and killed him without a second thought? It’s terrifying for Dean. He knows that there is something supernatural about his brother, and now his head is battling his heart. Poor Dean.

Two favorite parts of this episode: 1) When Sam says to Gordon, “Only he gets to call me that.” YOU GO SAM. Also, when Dean runs Gordon’s head into the door. Love it. I’ve said it several times and I’ll say it again: Do not mess with the Winchesters.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 3: Bloodlust

First thought upon seeing the title of this episode: more vampires? I’m down, I guess.

Um...okay. More hooks hurting people? And...beheading?

I love that the Impala gets her own set of shots, like “hells yeah, she’s back, bitches!” Dean is so happy to be driving her again.

Oh, my GOD! Silence of the Lambs references cracking me up! Plus, Dean’s face as he says them? Priceless!

OHHHHHHHH I forgot that vampires are only really dead when they’re beheaded! Duhhhh! I smacked myself in the forehead when I realized it. This guy is going to get himself into real trouble if Sam and Dean don’t help him. I mean, granted, he’s killed two vampires already, but seriously...one wrong move and it’s his head that’s going to get sliced off. See? Good thing Sammy was there to pull you out from under a saw, hm?

I feel like Dean beheading that vampire is a really momentous occasion. It’s his first hunt since he almost died (for real), and I think he’s kind of torn between enjoying it and freaking out about it. And now he’s drowning himself in a little bit of drink. Meanwhile, Sam’s all freaking out and not enjoying it at all.

Something’s not right about this guy. His sister’s a vampire, isn’t she. Isn’t she... Oh no. That’s not going to go well later. Even Ellen says that Gordon is a great hunter but he’s not good for people around him.

“There’s no maybe. Find the bad thing and kill it.” Totally disagree. And I don’t think the Winchesters would really agree, either. Not since the ‘bad thing’ possessed their father and Sam didn’t shoot him. Gordon is trying to like...psych Dean out. I’m not pleased with this, at all. And Gordon...I really don’t trust him. Really, really don’t trust him.

“Take him back and work on him.” What? What the crap does that mean? Nothing good, I’m sure.

I love Sammy. I really love him. Especially for his speech to Dean. That was brilliant, and if Dean was less of an ass, he’d listen. Sam’s right! At least in this case.

Oh, I Like Lenore. I don’t want her to die. That totally sucks. She’s pretty awesome. And why does Gordon just happen to have Dead Man’s Blood? I mean, I guess I could make a case for the fact that he’s been hunting them for a long time. But woah. He’s an asshole.

Dean better jump in. I swear, there’s no way he can watch someone point a knife at Dean. Holy...shit. Gordon killed his own sister? Wow. This guy is ridiculous. Of course they’re going to want his blood. They’re vampires. They don’t stop wanting human blood. But they’re trying to be different. Up until this guy decided to make Sam’s blood drop onto her face, they were succeeding.

Pretty fucking awesome of her to say no. I knew I liked her. And Dean...why would you trust Gordon after all that? Come on. Let’s go. Dean, you’re not a killer. I mean, you are, but not like Gordon. You only kill the evil things. You only kill evil things! That was nice walking him into the door frame, though. Good one, Dean.

That was a hell of a punch. Sam approves. Look at his face. He totally approves. I won’t lie and say I didn’t rewind so I could see it again.

“Yeah, Dean, but you didn’t, and that’s what matters.” Exactly. Such shades of grey, seriously. But it’s character development. I mean, last season (it’s weird to say that haha) Dean wouldn’t have hesitated. He’s right. Daddy brought them up to shoot first and ask questions later. Overturning that was such a big theme of this episode. I’m glad that Lenore proved Dean wrong, and I’m glad that Dean proved himself wrong. Like I said: character development.

The title ‘Bloodlust’ was apt, I think. Not only because it was about vampires, but because of Gordon’s nature, and also Dean’s. Interesting parallel.

Moral of this story? Never trust anyone who drives an El Camino. They suck.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 2: Everybody Loves A Clown (SPOILER BLOG)

I only care about two things in this episode. Clowns don’t really scare me that much, so the whole supernatural story line was whatever.

Number One Thing I Care About: ELLEN. JO. ASH. I am so happy they’re here.

Waxing on this just a bit, I do want to say that I adore Ellen. I miss her. I think her death was very unfair. I basically ship her and Bobby with all my heart. The idea of her having something with John made me cringe (especially considering how Ellen’s husband died... Oh, John, how I despise you).

I also adore Jo. Of all the women for Dean, I like Jo best. I don’t necessarily see her and Dean together; I think of Jo as Dean’s little sister. I don’t know if it’s all the fanfiction I read that makes me feel this way, but there you have it. I think he loves her in his own way and it breaks his heart when she dies, but if she hadn’t died, I don’t think he had any romantic future with her. Despite this, I love her as a character and I miss her terribly.

And Ash is hilarious. That’s all.

Number Two Thing I Care About: Dean beating up the Impala. The entire time, I was shouting, “Stop hitting your girlfriend! Abusive relationship!”

It was nice to see him express himself (albeit violently) and I do think Sam is right in saying that Dean wasn’t dealing with John’s death. However, Sam doesn’t know what John said to Dean right before he died, and nobody’s getting over that little piece of news quickly. Half the reason I think Dean is so worried about Sam right now is that he’s scared that Sam is turning into the man he’ll have to kill one day, which terrifies him.

This episode did give me that nice brotherly teasing I’ve been craving. I love when Sam just leaves Dean out to dry when the carnies get all up in his face, and conversely I laughed so hard when Dean stole the normal chair so Sam had to sit in the clown one. The past episodes have been so serious, it’s nice to have fun with the boys again.

Favorite line of the episode is Sam awkwardly excusing himself from the Jo/Dean conversation: “Oh, yeah, um, I’ve gotta uh. I’ve gotta go. Over there. Right now.”

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 2: Everybody Loves A Clown

Yeah, I’m actually not that big on clowns. Funny story, though. You know those clowns who go to schools and like...talk about not doing drugs and stuff like that? Yeah, my Mom’s dad was one of those for like...a few years I think.

Why the hell is this clown following her? Clowns are creepy in the dark. Why on Earth would you go greet the clown? Are you stupid or something? I hate clowns. I just decided. At first I wasn’t so upset about them, but now? Yeah, I hate them.

If I was Dean and I just learned the truth about my brother, whatever it is, I would tell him, either.

Plus, how does Jensen make crying look manly? I’m mad.

Love the car. Just perfect. A van. They’re going to visit Ellen. I understand that she’s also a regular? YAY! More regulars!

Ash=favorite. I always love the crazy geniuses. “All business up front, party in the back.” I hate mullets, but it’s perfect for Ash.

I love how defensive they are about their fears. “Planes crash!” “Yeah, and apparently, clowns kill!” Clowns are NOT your friends, asshole! Holy shit. I might sleep with the light on tonight. Clowns are fucking scary.

Ew. Bed of dead insects. Gross. Also, what’s brass got to do with anything? Papazian’s the evil clown. Called it right before he revealed himself. Ugh I hate it when things jump out at me. I hate it.

Oh, Sammy, don’t cry! Dean, hug your brother. Orrrr, smash shit with a crowbar. That’s cool, too. Dean, you are not fine.

Welp, I’m never going to a funhouse again, or anywhere near a clown. No one can make me. Thank you, Supernatural, for turning something I dislike into something I’m absolutely terrified of.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 1: In My Time of Dying (SPOILER BLOG)

These reviews are getting harder and harder for me to right. I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS.

Okay, so right off the bat: I love Sam and Dean’s relationship so much. And no, I do not ship Wincest. Don’t even make me go down that road. ANYWAY. I love their unbelievable bond of brotherhood. And it really is closer than brotherhood, sometimes. At this point, they’re all they’ve got. Their father cares for them, but when you get down to it, it’s Dean and Sam, traveling together, taking care of each other, and that has to be enough. Just the pure fact that Sam can sense Dean’s anger and his presence in the room is so telling. They can feel each other even when the other isn’t around. They’re just that close. When Sam is screaming in the beginning, begging to know whether his father and brother are all right, I almost cried.

I think this episode was really eye-opening for Dean where his father is concerned. He wasn’t necessarily right in what he was thinking about his dad, but he still allowed himself to doubt, which he hasn’t done until recently. That speech when his father is staring at his comatose body just about broke my heart:

“You haven’t called a soul for help. You haven’t even tried. Aren’t you gonna do anything? Aren’t you even gonna say anything? I’ve done everything you’ve ever asked me. Everything! I’ve given everything I’ve ever had! And you’re just gonna sit there and watch me die? What the hell kind of father are you?”

Augh. So sad.

A couple things writing/filming-wise (something I don’t go into very much): Supernatural doesn’t get creative with shots a lot of the time, or else I don’t notice, but I adored the shot of Dean walking down the stairs in the very beginning of the episode. The camera is very low to the ground and angled in a very distinct way, and it gives the viewer this very off-center feeling, like something is wrong. It’s very indicative of the mood of the moment and the way Dean is feeling. ALSO, I love the parallel between Dean and the Impala and Sam’s insistence that they tow her back to Bobby’s. If there’s one working part, they can’t give up. I can picture Sam giving that exact same speech to Dean’s doctor.

I flinched when Sam told John to go to hell. By the end of this episode, he’ll be there.

I was actually so mad at Tessa and how she manipulated Dean. He helps people and he was tricked into pitying her. The funny thing about Tessa (and reapers in general) is that I think she’s right. Death is nothing to fear if it’s the right time. I don’t think Death is bad, and I don’t think reapers are bad. But Tessa is wrong about Dean. It’s not his time. He has a job to do, a destiny set down by God himself that supersedes angels and demons and the Four Horseman of the Fucking Apocalypse. She can’t take him now. (First time disagreeing with Dean ever... MARK IT: There is such thing as an honorable death.)

One of my absolute favorite images of the series happens in this episode when Sam is using the Ouija Board to communicate with Dean. They’re sitting together on the floor, cross-legged, like little kids, trying to communicate without speaking. And it’s working. They’re moving that little marker together. It’s silly considering that Ouija Boards are small potatoes compared to what they usually deal with, but it’s sweet and it speaks volumes about how close they are.

Another line that broke my heart: “You can’t go away, not now. We were just starting to be brothers again.” GOD, SAMMY. You can’t just say things like that! I would like my heart intact, thanks very much!

And, of course, we get to see Azazel for the first time (technically second, but the first time we couldn’t see his face). Nothing too special about their conversation, except for that I smirked when Azazel said that Dean wasn’t much of a threat. I love in season six when Crowley makes a comment about people consistently underestimating the Winchesters. That’s right, bitch. DO NOT think that Dean won’t kick your ass to next Tuesday if you mess with his family.

This last little bit of John we see is very confusing for me. I’ve spent a lot of energy really hating him, but it’s difficult for me to do so in this moment. He’s giving his life for his son, going to hell to save Dean. The speech he gives Dean right before he dies is so important; Dean needed to know it to continue fighting the fight. But in NO WAY to I approve of what he whispers to Dean. He is basically telling him to give up once Sam goes dark side. John, of all people, should know that 1) there’s always hope. There’s always something to be done. Nobody is lost forever. Also, 2) Dean could NOT bring himself to kill Sam. Just the opposite: he will do anything to bring him back to life. It’s mean and stupid of John to ask that of Dean.

When the doctor says, “You have some kind of angel watching over you,” I laughed out loud. It’s such a common phrase, but it’s so prophetic. CASTIEL IS ON HIS WAY.

Interesting biblical tidbit: John dies at 10:41am. This is Matthew 10:41-- "Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward." Don't know if that means anything, but I think it's cool anyway.

Favorite line of this episode (and the one moment of humor we get): “Dude, I full on Swayze-d that mother.”

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 2, Episode 1: In My Time Of Dying

Welp, it’s Season 2 time. I’m so excited to get going! Let’s do it!

Well, shit. What a way to start a season. So many paramedics! But they’re alive. That’s good. Except...no one can see Dean...coma. He’s in a coma. That is not good. Not. Good.

Side note. With the mark on his forehead, Dean looks like Harry Potter. *giggles*

Is Sam hearing him without realizing it? Because they said exactly the same thing. More likely is that they just have the same thoughts. But why do I think that being like this, whatever Dean’s doing, is going to be most instructive...

“Dean is gonna be pissed.” TROLOLOL Dean/Impala forever.

Dean’s finally seeing Daddy for what he really is. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Holy shit. Who is this girl and why is she all of a sudden dying? But she could see Dean, right? Oh...Dean can move things. He hit something. Why is he flickering like that? Is his actual body in trouble? Oh, no. He can’t die. He can’t! What the shit is that ghost-y thing over him? She’s killing people.

Tessa’s doing the same thing Dean is doing. That’s pretty crazy.

Doctor Kripke? TROLL!

So if that thing touches you, you die? It’s like another reaper?

Sitting here laughing my pants off because of the Ouija board. I believe in them, though, so I’m only really laughing at Dean’s face. “God, I feel like I’m at a slumber party.”

Fucking hell, Daddy. Stop breaking your promises! Stop being a shitty father! SO PISSED AT YOU!

Tessa’s the reaper? I don’t want him to die. He can’t be dying. He can’t die. HE! CAN’T! DIE! I’m tempted to say I won’t let him, but honestly, there’s nothing I can really do.

You want to WHAT?! Make a DEAL WITH THE DEMON WHO KILLED YOUR WIFE?! Unless it’s to get Dean alive, I don’t freaking care what it is, I’m THROUGH with you, Daddy, you hear that?! Even if it IS to get Dean alive, I’m not happy with you, Daddy.

What is the truth about Sam and the other children? And why hasn’t Daddy told him? Is it really bad? I bet it’s really bad.

Wow, okay, so inhabiting the reaper, the demon could bring Dean back, good as new? That’s good. I’m pretty glad he’s back. But for real. Daddy probably had to give his life in return for Dean’s. He’s going to tell Dean something and then go off to his death. I hope Daddy tells him what the truth is about Sam and the other children. That better be what it is. Either way, I doubt we’ll find out right now.

Oh, yeah, the ‘I’m proud of you speech’ always means someone is going to die. Whatever Daddy told Dean, he’s devastated. Dean is, not Daddy, I mean.

Why does the part about Sam yelling for help while crouching over John remind me of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Probably because the music is really sad and you can’t hear Sam yelling. Yeah, that’s gotta be it.

Well, shit. What a way to start the season. Daddy’s dead. He summoned the demon so that he could heal Dean. Was that his goal all along? Was that why he asked for the summoning stuff in the first place? As much as I want to be pissed off at him for summoning the demon, for dying, for giving him the Colt, I can’t. He proved that he loves his sons and values their lives over his.

RIP, Daddy.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 22: Devil's Trap (SPOILER BLOG)

Note: This is a liveblog because I can’t organize my thoughts right now.

I love when Dean goes Alpha and uses perfect logic against Sam. DEAN IS ALWAYS RIGHT. GET OVER IT.

BOBBY BOBBY BOBBY. Team Free Will is assembling...

The Apocalypse is coming. That’s the storm.

Poor Dean. He really believes that John is a superhero.

I hate when people in Supernatural break deals, but honestly Meg? Did you think that you could just tell the truth and then they would let you go on your merry way? They’re Winchesters. Exorcising demons is what they do.

I’m going to have to side with Dean on the whole should-we-shouldn’t-we debate. Sam is being dumb (he actually kind of reminds me of Soulless!Sam a la season six... worrisome); they can’t keep torturing the vessel and the soul inside just for information. I can see where Bobby’s coming from... Meg is the only thing keeping the body alive. But what’s the other option? Keep her captive until the body heals? Is that even possible? They can’t keep her prisoner forever. The vessel is broken; the only thing left to do is put her out of her misery.

Poor vessel. We’ll never even know her name.

LOL at Dean defending the honor of the Impala. You can’t just write all over her whenever you want, Sam. You don’t get to turn her into a devil’s trap without her permission. She’s a lady. Have a little respect.

DEAN. You are so perfect and eloquent when you are telling Sam why they have to take the Colt. I love that Sam and John are so alike. I’ve always found that the people who are alike have a harder time getting along. That’s how conflict grows, and I really believe that it’s the traits you hate in other people that you hate the most in yourself.

I hate demons. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

Dean, you tricky bastard. Again I say, Dean is always right. Get used to it, Samantha.

FUCKING AZAZEL. GET OUT OF JOHN THIS INSTANT.

If I was to have a Supernatural drinking game, there would be a rule about chugging something every time you hear the word “meat-suit”. They use it literally every episode, especially once the angels arrive.

I don’t understand Azazel’s weird demon family. Like, how is Meg his daughter? Was she his daughter in real life? Or his demonic daughter? Do demons have families? Color me confused.

DEAR AZAZEL I HATE YOU DO NOT SPEAK TO DEAN LIKE THAT HE ALREADY HAS ZERO SELF ESTEEM YOU DO NOT GET TO BRING HIM DOWN DEAN IS PERFECT OKAY SO SHUT YOUR UGLY MOUTH AND GET OUT.

“Funny! But that’s all part of your M.O., isn’t it? Mask all that nasty pain. Mask the truth. You know, you fight and you fight for this family, but the truth is... they don’t need you. Not like you need them. Sam: he’s clearly John’s favorite. Even when they fight, it’s more concern than he’s ever shown you.”

Literally, this is all my brain can do when Dean is sad: Dean. Dean. Dean. Don’t cry. Dean. You’re perfect. Dean. I love you. Dean. Chin up. Dean. Dean. You can get through this. Dean. STOP CRYING.

Even though I knew it was coming, I still jumped when the truck hit them. I just hate it. They were on their way to recovery. Now, nothing is okay. Demons are everywhere. I hate everything. Every Supernatural finale leaves me feeling empty inside.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 22: Devil's Trap

Whose help are they getting? Bobby. Awesome. AWESOME! I know that he sticks around. Jim Beaver. I’m pumped! Real pumped for regulars aside from Sam and Dean.

I love when they catch things and kill things and such. It’s so fun. But she’s lying. She has to be. Daddy’s still alive. “That’s a girl.” HAHA Bobby! So now they’re going to exorcise the demon and get the real girl out? Or, they’re going to try, I guess.

I’m not really upset that they’re going to finish the exorcism. Except that the girl is going to die if they finish, which is kind of bad, but I mean, her body is already dead, after falling from the building and getting shot and all that stuff. So that sucks, but the demon has to get out.

I’m waiting for her to pick her head up and freak out because she’s still the demon. But she’s not, she can’t be, not after the exorcism. I don’t want her to still be the demon, but it’s awful that she’s going to die and that she remembers being possessed.

Welp, I guess they gotta go get Daddy and try not to all get dead, hm? The bad part is, I’m not sure that Daddy’s going to be fine.

So basically, they’re going to have 7 minutes to find Daddy and kill the demons? Good luck. I mean that so sincerely, too. Oh, they’re going to get uniforms? Cool! Pretend to be firemen! If that idea didn’t scare me half to death, I’d be pumped. But wait, if they can possess anyone, doesn’t that mean they can possess Sam, Dean and John, too? Premonition.

Well, shit, a guy with an axe is pretty horrifying. But the demons can possess anyone, so they can get absolutely any person. And there’s that other guy again, the one who was with Meg last episode. He’s beating the crap out of Sam, but Dean shot him with the Colt. I approve. Dean does what he has to do.

Two bullets left, though.

OH! The demon who’s been after the kids! It’s that one! The ‘demon’!

What happens if the demon possesses one of them? Like he’s possessing John! SHIT HE HAS TO KILL HIS DAD! SHITSHITSHITSHIT! WAS NOT PREPARED! Oh, man, I was so not prepared for this. SO. NOT. PREPARED! How else was the demon able to flicker the lights, if the windows and doors are salted? That just means it can’t get out of the house.

Crap. I hope that if they shoot him, he really is possessed. That would suck if he wasn’t. SHIT! BUT HE IS POSSESSED! God!

What the hell is this thing? Shit. He’s like the Daddy!Demon. Great. That’s juuuust great. This guy’s a bitch. Don’t listen to him, Dean! They DO need you! They do! Oh, my GOD! PLEASE! Don’t listen to him! Don’t believe him!

Shit! It’s draining Dean’s blood, and he’s trying to get Daddy to help them. Thank God. Sam, you have to do it. You HAVE to! Oh, man.

One bullet left.

But shooting it in the leg would just kill the demon, right? RIGHT?! Does that mean it’s gone? Is it dead? God, I hope so. I doubt it, though. That would be too easy.

Oh. Shit. Demon 18-wheeler driver. Did not expect. And that WOULD be the end of the season.

Final Season 1 thoughts. Sam and Dean are awesome and they love each other. Daddy isn’t always the best and he doesn’t always do the smartest things, but he does love his boys. The demon got away, and they only have 1 bullet left to kill it with. They better not miss, that’s all I have to say about that.

This show is incredibly addicting, and I can’t wait to start Season 2!

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 21: Salvation

This is something else I’ve already learned from fans of this show that I’m around. Carry on my Wayward Son is a finale song. Makes sense, since there are 2 episodes left of the season. It’s very nostalgic, reminiscent of the first episode. I approve.

Are they actually going to kill the demon that killed Mary by the end of the season? I hope so, I’m just not sure where they would go from there.

Finally, Meg’s eyes change, so we’re sure that she’s a demon. But I knew it from the beginning. Check my posts. For reals. But why is she after this preacher in particular? Is he a Hunter, too? With all those tools, you know...oh, he might know where the Winchesters are. But couldn’t Meg’s boss (whoever it is) tell her? Or is that not a thing that demons can do?

Still love Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I’m not so huge on Daddy, but JDM...he’s got it going on.

Oh. Pastor Jim! He was the one who John took the boys to after the Striga tried to get Sam, I remember. It took me a second to figure out who he was and why he would have known where the Winchesters are.

Jeez, this sucks for Sammy, but he’s working through it to try and figure out where this thing is going to hit next, and SUCCESS! But still, it must be painful for him, you know?

So that’s pretty terrifying. We’ve never actually seen how the mothers (and Jess) get onto the ceiling, but that’s scary. I thought that maybe they were already dead when they were put up there, but I guess they were alive, and that’s way worse.

This has to do with the fucking GUN?! WHAT! I’m pissed. I want to punch everyone in the face right now. And John’s going to Nebraska to give “the Colt” to Meg while Sam and Dean stay in Iowa to kill the demon.

That guy, with Meg...is he the demon? I wouldn’t be surprised, actually.

I just really want to know why it’s choosing the babies it’s choosing. What’s so special about them, that this demon is visiting them and putting their moms on the ceiling before starting fires in their homes? Will I ever find out?

Oh, now I get what he was doing with the water tower. He prayed over it and made it holy water. Niiiiice. John, you’re awesome.

Should I know what the demon’s eyes mean? That gold stuff? And there are only 3 bullets left in the Colt, too.

Awesome cliffhanger, but I’m sorry if I don’t believe Meg, that they’ll never see John again. I think they will. I think they will.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 21: Salvation (SPOILER BLOG)

THE ROAD SO FAR... I am so emotional. Especially after that HEARTWRENCHING SEASON SIX FINALE, rewatching these episodes is just breaking my heart and healing it and breaking it all over again.

Oh, God. I can never hear “Carry On My Wayward Son”, in a Supernatural context or out, again without tearing up a little. The lyrics are just... augh. And I can drum along in the beginning and it’s just so wonderful and AHHH. Basically I love that song and it means so much to me now because of SPN and my darling Winchesters.

Meg’s monologue in the beginning makes me cringe.

“I’ve lied... a lot. I’ve stolen. I’ve lusted. And the other day, I met this man. A nice guy, you know. And we had a really good chat, sort of like this. Then I slit his throat and ripped his heart out through his chest. Does that make me a bad person?”

AND THEN HER EYES GO BLACK. The first time I saw this, I actually almost cried. She is the worst.

I don’t know if this is intentional, but I love the fact that the Winchesters are from Kansas. Wizard of Oz reference, anyone? The Winchesters are over the rainbow, witches and animated scarecrows and all. They need a wizard to help them get home.

My last blog was a giant John rant, so I’m not going to do that again, but his reaction to Sam’s powers upset me. I hate that he’s like, “You should have called!” Um, sweetheart? They did. Several times. You never picked up. You were in Lawrence and you didn’t see them. The fact that you don’t know what’s going on is purely your fault. I also can’t believe how naive John is about reality, considering what an amazing hunter he is. Does he really think that they can kill this one demon and then they’ll be happy again? Hell is full of demons, love. This, what you’ve created, can never be over. Sam can’t go back to school and Dean can’t have a family of his own, because they will always be hunted. Maybe not your fault entirely, but you made them into hunters and that’s not something you can get away from.

The brotherly love in this episode is beautiful. I love their chick-flick moment in the car (especially Dean’s reaction to it). Their conversation after they save the family from the fire twisted my heart so much. I especially love the role-reversal. In the very first episode, Dean slammed Sam up against the bridge for saying that their mother was never coming back. Now Sam is doing the same thing. I love how Sam says, “Don’t you say that! Not you!” He thought that Dean felt the same way he did and finding out that his brother has moved on is too much for him to bear. Dean breaks my heart in this scene as well, when he talks about how their family, the three of them, is all they have.

Favorite line of this episode: “If hunting this demon means you getting yourself killed, then I hope we never find the damn thing!” Dean is so amazing. He knows that finding the demon is important, but losing Sam would be far worse than letting the demon get away. Their mother is gone, Jess is gone, but Sam is still there, and Dean will do whatever it takes to make sure his brother is safe. True brotherly love.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 20: Dead Man's Blood

Daddy?! Love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that’s why I love John so much. His voice is so lovely, not that they’re short on lovely voices on this show (cough-Jensen and Jared-cough).

So this guy Elkins is...not crazy. Or not very crazy. He clearly realizes there’s something up with this people, which is great because people as a whole are generally extremely unobservant. But I guess he knows her or something? And her eyes are flashing colors. That’s pretty weird. She’s not human. But what is she?

...Eating in...they’re eating him...so they’re...what, vampires?

Is it bad that I want Sam and Dean to take Elkins’ journal? To supplement Daddy’s, of course. It’d be interesting, to have all of Daddy’s knowledge plus Elkins’.

Daddy’s so paranoid. I’m kind of like *rolls eyes* okay, John...enough already.

What’s so important about---I WAS RIGHT! INTERRUPTING MY OWN THOUGHTS TO SAY THAT I WAS RIGHT! THOSE PEEPS WERE VAMPIRES! Anyway...back to the thought. What’s so important about a Colt revolver? Why is it so important?

Ugh, such creepy teeth. Gross.

I hate harping so much on the relationship that the boys have with Daddy, but seriously, Sammy, come on, man. Get it together. John’s doing the same thing he always did, it’s not like he’s suddenly doing something new.

“Revenge isn’t worth much if you end up dead.” Pity that line comes from a vampire, since it’s such a big theme of this show in general.

I hate when people cut themselves. I mean as far as ‘for fun’ goes. It kind of freaks me out. But they just turned that girl into a vampire, right? Well, hell.

And the gun. There were only 4 bullets left when Elkins opened the case (if I’m remembering correctly). So he killed 3 things with it after he got it? Or three things were killed with it up until now, I mean. And it was made for a Hunter. Which probably means that it’s going to come back. Right?

I’m breathing super quietly, hoping that nothing gets loud. And of course, everything gets loud. That chick is all scream-y and shit. Excellent. That’s going to work out really well. Greeeaaaatttt.

I’m glad that Sam and Daddy are having a heart-to-heart. It’s really nice. Heartbreaking, but nice. They’re finally able to connect like they never could before, and that’s beautiful.

Ew. Why do they have a bottle of blood? And what do they have to do? Ew ew ew ew ew ewewewewewewewew. I’m pretty grossed out by this, honestly. I’m not big on blood. I’m not squeamish, but I don’t really like blood...unless it’s mine, which is a weird thing to say.

Daddy’s going away again. But Dean’s stepping up. Nice, Dean. I’m proud of you dude. But Daddy’s got a point about them being his children and how he wants to keep them safe. It sucks. I can see his point of view, but I know that the boys have a point, too.

“Boo.” Excellent, Dean.

Sammy’s MIA, though. Why do I have a feeling he’s...yep, there he is, with Dean, too. I love when they rescue each other. It’s great. I’m glad and upset that they have to do it pretty much every episode.

I love Sam’s face when Dean talks back to John. He’s like “da shiiiit, DEAN!”

But they’re going after the demon together. FAMILY TIME!

In conclusion...JDM, you are one fine son of a bitch. That’s really all I have to say. I talk about how attractive I find Jared and Jensen quite a bit, but all props to JDM, because he’s amazing.

EDIT: Okay, okay, I'm clearly a fan of Dean's, and automatically write his name where I shouldn't. I fixed the title, but I laughed for a clear minute before I did. i was trying to figure out if it was worth it to change it to the actual title or not. In the end, I did. *sigh*

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 20: Dead Man's Blood (SPOILER BLOG)

This blog is probably just going to be one big John rant, so I’ll get a couple things out of the way first. One, hunters are damn smart. Elkins carved a P.O. box number and combination into his floor as he was being murdered by vampires. It doesn’t get much better than that. And Dean is brilliant for finding it and scratching it out on paper. You keep pretending you’re an idiot, Dean, I know you’re a complete genius.

Two, these vampires are so annoying. I hate that True Blood kind of vampire that’s really attractive and wears skimpy clothes and sexes everybody up all the time. I know we meet a more normal family of vamps later, but the ones in this episode are just dumb. Who wants to be part of a vampire pack where the leader gets to sleep in a bed with his girlfriend and you have to be content to sleep in a hammock without personal space? Doesn’t sound like fun.

Anyway, on to the big man himself, Mr. John Winchester. I have a lot of conflicted feelings about John. He obviously cares for his boys. That is clear. And he obviously misses his wife and wants to avenge her death. When she was murdered, he needed to keep his sons safe, so raising them with the knowledge that evil was out there and teaching them the skills necessary to defend themselves is responsible parenting. However, teaching them to be hunters and sending them out on jobs is not, and it doesn’t matter how broken up you are about the death of your wife: it doesn’t change the fact that you turned your children into monster-killing machines.

I can forgive John a little for being overprotective and not wanting Sam to be alone at college, especially considering that Azazel had demons at Stanford and John had a right to be worried. Still, it doesn’t give him the right to tell Sam never to come back and to treat them like children the way he does now. Sam and Dean are grown up, and they have been fighting supernatural creatures without his help for a while now. He needs to include them in what’s happening.

I guess I just don’t like the way he talks to his kids. He rules them with fear, which I don’t like. And he was mean to Dean for absolutely no reason! What’s with the dig on the Impala? If you hadn’t noticed, John, your sons have been running around the country killing monsters and trying to make sure you weren’t dead. They don’t exactly have a lot of time for auto-checkups.

I can really relate to Dean in this episode. Being caught in the crossfire between your parent and your sibling is a terrible feeling. You don’t know who you should side with, and you try to mediate what’s happening, but most of the time everyone is too upset to listen to reason and things escalate. I’m so proud of Dean in this episode for taking a stand and talking back to his father. I like seeing this side of Dean that isn’t just blind obedience; he’s a smart man and he realizes when his father is wrong. That’s very important.

Final thoughts: THE COLT THE COLT THE COLT THEY HAVE IT!

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 19: Provenance

Why does this family photo kind of remind me of the Addams Family? That’s not good. Oh, and it moves. Yeah, good choice, stupid couple. Oh, crap, okay, they’re dead already. Well, then. Okay. Moving on.

New Paltz, New York?! HOLY SHIT THAT’S RIGHT BY WHERE I LIVE!

I love when they climb fences. I love it so much. I don’t know why. It’s just awesome. Also, this score is AMAZING! This show usually has good music, but that was excellent.

Annnnddd the painting’s redoing itself. I knew it was too early for it to be gone, but I wasn’t expecting it to make itself again.

Why on earth would anyone want this painting? It’s ugly as shit. The only reason I feel okay saying that is that it’s not actually a painting of someone’s family. I’m sure they’ve just painted it for the episode. But yeah. Ugly as shit.

“Sam. Marry that girl.” I love Dean’s one-liners.

I sense some sort of foreshadowing as far as Sam talking about how he might be cursed. I don’t know that’s it’s a curse, but I’ve been wrong before. It sucks that Sam can’t be with Sarah. He clearly likes her, and she likes him. Plus, she’s doing all this stuff with them, like going into the mausoleum, the house, all that.  That’s pretty awesome, considering that most girls wouldn’t be anywhere near that.

Oh, shit. I hate childish cackling. Hate it with my whole being. So it was the little girl the whole time? Why? Because she got murdered? Or is there something else that we don’t know yet? She killed her real parents? Woah. Heavy, man.

In conclusion...Glad Sammy got some lovin, but it’s a pity that it won’t last. It can’t last, not with Sam and Dean being everywhere and anywhere. That’s unfortunate. Dean has the best one-liners, but Sam makes me laugh, too. The hotel they stayed in was hilariously disco. I love this show.

Moar, moar!

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 19: Provenance (SPOILER BLOG)

Note: Love that one of the cars in the auction parking lot has a license plate that says “THE KRIP”. Love you, Kripke, you troll.

This episode makes me terribly sad. You won’t find me sympathizing much with Sam (I get very bitter and angry at him when he goes all darkside) but this episode makes me weep for his poor, lonely heart. He still seems so young, so to have lost so much is heartbreaking. In my rational mind, I know Jared and Jensen are much older than I am, but in SPN-verse, Sam is only a year or so out of undergrad, only a few years older than me, and I think we get a sense in this episode of how much he has seen despite his youth.

Remember all of the vehement, unreasonable hatred I felt towards Cassie in the ‘Route 666’ episode? Well, I feel the complete and total opposite for Sarah. I adore Sarah. I wish her and Sam could be together forever and have happy demon-free lives with a white picket fence and 2.5 children and a dog. Seriously. I ship them so hard. Maybe it’s because there isn’t really anybody else to ship Sam with (Jess was perfect, but she’s obviously gone, and Ruby is TERRIBLE AND EVIL) so when we meet Sarah and she’s just so wonderful... I can’t help but love her. She and Sam nerd-flirting together was one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

I felt horrible when Sam told Sarah he thought he was cursed. My first instinct was to think, “No, Sam, bb, it’s okay, you’re not cursed!” But then I thought about it and... yeah, he kind of is, in a way. Azazel has marked him for Apocalyptic disaster, and anybody that he tries to be close to will be taken down for sport or spite. It’s not fair, and I hate Azazel for it, but Sam is smart to stay away from people he knows could get caught in the crossfire. Sarah is smart and capable and definitely able to take care of herself, but demon attacks are not something you can wriggle your way out of. Look at Mary. She was a hunter for a huge portion of her life, but when it came time for Azazel to pin her to the ceiling, she was powerless.

I don’t have much to say about the actual “mystery” of this episode. Blah, blah, vengeful spirit, burn the bones, etc. Just your normal, run-of-the-mill haunting. Definitely creepier that it turned out to be a little girl with the MOST TERRIFYING CACKLE EVER but to me, the bulk of this episode lies with Sam’s inner struggle. It just about broke my heart when he told Sarah he would come back to see her; in a year or so he’ll be exorcising demons with his mind and gulping down demon blood like it’s cranberry juice.

Last thoughts: Dean in this episode made me LOL forever. In all my sadness at Sam’s romantic complications, Dean made me smile so many times with his shenanigans. Oh, Dean Winchester, I love you.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 18: Something Wicked

All I can think of is in one of the Harry Potter movies, I think it’s the Prisoner of Azkaban, when the choir is singing and they have those giant frogs, and they’re singing “Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble. Something wicked this way comes.” And the frogs ribbit really loudly...

My brain...

Did that thing, whatever it is with the weird handprint, the Striga, try to get Sammy before? That’s kind of what the flashback and Dean’s face suggest. If it’s the same one that John fought and it got away, I wonder how crazy this thing is. Oh, Dean’s flashbacks are kind of heartbreaking.

This kid Michael is like a mini version of Dean. Taking care of  his younger brother, Asher, while the parent is busy working. New insight into Dean, though. John freaked out on him, so it kind of makes sense that it would have messed him up a little. Shit.

Michael is really brave. I’m a younger sister, so I’ve never really had anyone younger than me who I would do anything for, but still, I know how my sister acted when we were kids, and how she still acts. She used to beat me up all the time, drag me across the floors of our house by my ankles (playing, of course), and give me Indian burns, but any time I was upset, she’d offer to beat up whoever upset me. And I think it works that way in reverse, too. My sister is the only person who I would do absolutely anything for. I’d do a lot for my parents or any other member of my family, but my sister? Yeah, I’d do anything for her.

Oh, hell, there’s no way Dean’s going to let this Striga get his brother a second time. No freaking way.

In conclusion, I think this was a really great episode. I want Michael to become a Hunter now, though. Any other kid would have screamed their lungs out and ran away when the Striga came at him, but not Michael. I’m glad Dean got to kill the Striga and keep Sammy safe.

“I can’t use this ID.” “Why not?” “It says Bikini Inspector!”

I love this show.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 18: Something Wicked (SPOILER BLOG)

I think it’s interesting that John Winchester, who had never hunted previous to the death of his wife, turns out to be one of the greatest hunters ever. Just the way Sam and Dean talk about him, like nothing ever got away before the Striga. He literally never fails. We see it in the flashback sequence when John comes in, yelling and firing his gun. He’s powerful and trained and kind of scary. It’s amazing that this very simple family man turns into this unbelievable powerhouse.

I love episodes like this where we really get glimpses into what makes Dean the man he is in present day. He is tormented by his constant need to be loved by his father, bound to a blind obedience because the one time he disobeyed, things went wrong. His father is extremely hard on him (with reason... John’s orders were to keep them safe and Dean didn’t listen) but it doesn’t help with Dean’s unbelievable guilt. Dean tends to believe that he is at fault for people’s deaths even when he’s not. He feels responsible for everyone and everything.

Speaking as an older sister, I can relate to this feeling. My younger brother and I used to beat on each other constantly, but if he ever got seriously hurt on my watch or it was somehow my fault, the guilt would eat me alive. I remember, very clearly, sitting in my bathtub at eight years old, crying after a mud fight turned ugly with a grain of sand in my brother’s eye. To this day, I can’t forgive myself for hurting him, even if I was just a kid.

I love when Dean finds kids who he sees himself in, like Michael. In these moments, it’s easy to see that Dean is not as gruff and mean as he acts. He understands what it’s like to love someone so much and feel responsible for them.

This episode, seeing Michael, makes me wonder about the people Sam and Dean change as the travel, especially the kids. Like Sam said, they’ll always know that they should be afraid of the dark. The sad thing is, I could totally see Michael becoming a hunter. He had the right spirit and if he feels he could protect the way people he protects Asher, he would. How many other kids like Sam and Dean and Michael are there out there, who see the monsters underneath the bed and grow up to destroy them?

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 17: Hell House (SPOILER BLOG)

Three things I love:

I love Sam and Dean pranking each other. This episode was light-hearted enough that they could pull it off (I think the prank war might have been inappropriate in an episode with higher stakes). Even though that poor girl did die. That was sad. Regardless, their reactions to each other’s pranks were fantastic. I love the way Sam says, “You’re a friggin’ jerk!” I WANT MY JERK-BITCH MOMENT. MAKE IT HAPPEN SOONER.

I love the Ghostfacers. It’s kind of funny to see them be such prop characters in this episode when their next one is so serious and sad, but it was nice to have their comedy while we can. I was thinking about how the next Ghostfacers episode happens right before Dean’s year is up. It’s just funny how the next time Harry and Ed see the boys, so much will have changed.

The third thing I love about this episode is that although Sam and Dean escape unscathed, they don’t really solve the problem. I liked seeing an episode where they leave things less than perfect. Not everything is black and white. The ghost is gone, but legends will always be around. People will always be around to spread those legends. Again, the Winchesters’ work is never really done.

Short blog; there’s not much to say about this episode besides the fact that it’s hilarious and Jared looks unbelievably hot in a towel. I’m a Dean girl, myself, but I may have paused the show to just stare for a second.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 17: Hell House

Great. I hate when the title of the episode is enough to freak me out. Gotta love it...

Ooh, an episode set in Texas? I love Texas. That’s where I am right now, as a matter of fact.

Symbols written on the walls definitely mean that there’s something up. If I was that girl, I would not have even gone anywhere near that place, especially if I heard that there was something in the root cellar that only attacked girls. Wouldn’t happen...ever.

I love that all of the eye-witness accounts are completely different. Every time I watch a TV show where people get interviewed about the same exact thing and say totally opposing things, I just laugh. It’s so real. People’s memories and recollections are never going to be spot on, because we always interpret things differently than other people do. CSI was the show that taught me to never trust eyewitness testimony.

“Amateurs.” BAHAHAHA couldn’t be further from the truth, boys. Oh, man, this is rich. I love it. Sam and Dean playing it off like they have no idea what’s going on. Amazing. I love this show.

For the record, if there’s a house that I know there are supernatural rumors about, and I have the option to either go in said house or make out with someone, I don’t care HOW gross they are, I’ll make out with the person. No way I’d ever go in a house like that, I don’t care how much you paid me.

“I double dare you.” Trololol Dean trying to get Sammy to drink gross things.

Sometimes the camera shots in this show totally amaze me. In a good way, I mean. Totally amazed at the jars that almost seemed suspended when the axe went through the shelf.

Something’s going on here that isn’t explained by this story. The guy with the axe clearly wasn’t this douche-kid Craig. Tulpa. Tibetan thought-form. Cool. I mean, kind of. The ideas in this show are amazing. Love ittttt.

Sam and Dean are so adorable when they’re playing pranks on each other. YAY! :)

Oh shit. What the hell is that thing doing there?! Did Sam and Dean think it into the legend or something? Oh jeebus. He’s not freaking out oat the bullets?

Side note, I keep seeing things out of the corner of my eye. In the show, not in real life. There’s some kind of perception filter in here! AGH! DOCTORRRR!

*sigh* I’m crossing my shows, sorry. But I was serious about seeing something. Always to the left or the right of the screen. Terrifying.

“It kind of makes you wonder, of all the things we’ve hunted, how many existed just because people believed in them?” Brilliant line, Sam. Absolutely brilliant.

The underlying theme of this episode, that this thing was thought into existence, is really interesting, and that’s why I love Sam’s line so much. I think people in real life do this all the time. Hypochondria is only one term for it. As a society, we get freaked out way too easily, things get out of hand, they spiral out of control. That’s just how it is.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 16: Shadow (SPOILER BLOG)

I HATE MEG. NO. NO. GET OUT. I’m hoping that if I yell that at my computer screen enough, she’ll just go away. Eh. No such luck. But seriously, can she just die already?

I’m a little miffed at Sam for being so cavalier about the whole leaving thing. Either he’s an idiot (arguable) or he’s an asshole, because obviously Dean would want him to stay after they finished killing the demon who killed Mary. As gruff as Dean is, he’s made it perfectly clear that he likes working with Sam more than on his own. Not to mention, they need each other. Is Sam content to go be at college and pretend the world is normal when he knows his brother is probably getting hurt or maybe killed somewhere? Still, am sad for him. He clearly wants to be normal so much, but the fact is, he isn’t. He has a destiny, as corny as it sounds. So stop whining, Sam. Shut up and do your job.

(I’m really way too hard on Sam. I should stop.)

Dean is such a child in this episode. Really. It’s funny, because as much as he doesn’t want to settle down and start one of his own, he is such a family man. He just wants him, his dad, and his baby brother cruising in the Impala, killing monsters together. It’s pretty adorable. In a similar vein, his adoration of his father is sweet but slightly over the top. He was almost bragging to Meg when he was telling her that his father was too good to fall for the trap and get killed by the Daevas. And then when they ran into him in the apartment, he was so apologetic for calling John in the first place... it was practically groveling. I see nothing wrong with respecting one’s elders, but I am uncomfortable when sons have to answer “yes, sir” to their fathers. Is this the military?

I don’t like John in general, but I like him in this episode. I’m glad he and Sam got to have a nice moment and a little bit of reconciliation.

Final notes: Dear Meg, DIE. Dear Sam, LOVE YOUR FAMILY MORE. Dear John, LOVE YOUR SONS MORE. Dear Dean... don’t change a thing, you’re perfect, love you.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 16: Shadow

After watching the Doctor Who episodes Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead, I’m already scared of my shadow. I hope this doesn’t make me afraid of my life.

*Note* This episode kind of turned into just a random liveblogging and speculation post instead of anything else. Deal with it.

I’m guessing Meg is coming back? Why am I not happy about this? Why am I sensing that the message of this episode is that no one is ever safe?

“Hey Meredith, it’s Derek!” GREY’S ANATOMY! WhatUP! Kidding, but not really.

And that was a scary thing that killed her. Excellent.

Lawl, way to get distracted by a girl with a tattoo who loves tequila, Dean. Nice one.

Her heart was missing. What kind of spirit rips someone’s heart out? And makes some kind of shape on the ground with the pieces of the body? Da Eff?!

Sam’s so smart. He knows something’s up with Meg. That’s awesome that he at least realizes it.

Demon of darkness that has to be summoned and controlled? Wow, okay. This is gonna be rough, I can tell already.

“Bite me.” “Bite her. Don’t leave teeth marks, though, just enough to...” Oh, Dean, you’re quite the charmer. XDXD

Is Meg the demon or the one controlling it? I feel like she’s the demon, because it seemed in the last episode we saw her in, she was taking orders. It’s the same thing now. Yeah, she’s definitely a demon. I don’t care that her eyes haven’t changed like that other demon. She’s definitely a demon.

Everyone’s from Lawrence, Kansas! Whyyyyy, ugh. Okay, I have no ideas or theories. I’m kind of glad they called John, but he probably won’t show.

I love Dean-instigated emotional moments. He just wants his family to be back together! WAHHHHH!!!!

It’s a shadow thing that fights shadows that are connected to people?! What is my life...what is this show!

Oh, she’s holding them prisoner to get to their dad? Wow. That’s a pretty good plan. I mean, yeah...that came out wrong, But for real, it’s a pretty good plan.

“Loyalty, love.” What does that mean?

Why do I think she’s going to come back?

DADDY! DADDY’S HERE! Keysmashes forever!

WHAT THE SHIT! Was not expecting the demon-y things to get them so soon. Oh, great. I knew Meg would be back, though.

This must be a hard thing for Dean to say. He’s the one who just confessed to wanting his family to be together, but now he has to say that their dad has to go on without them. Shit, yeah, that sucks for Dean.

Okay, so maybe Meg’s not a demon? But she’s working for someone else, oh, man, I don’t know. My brain hurts trying to think of everything, and I’m probably still not prepared. Great.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 15: The Benders

If this episode centers around kids, I will literally shit a brick. I hate that crap because it scared me more than everything we’ve seen already combined. But it looks like I jumped the gun a little, so never mind. Think of that as a side note.

Okay, how many outfits do Sam and Dean have? State police now? They’re just doing it up, I guess. Gotta be prepared.

Oh...don’t even tell me Sam’s about to get abducted. Don’t even tell me. Oh, well, shit, of course he is. That’s just...that’s just SWELL! Excellent, and now Dean’s going to be all freaked out and stuff. I just can’t even explain how pissed off I am about this. Wow. Why Sam? Why the giant moose man?!

I was trying to find a way to bring this up, but I haven’t been able to until this episode. Sam and Dean’s last name. Winchester. First of all, I think it’s an awesome name. Second of all, I said the exact same thing this policewoman did when I heard it. “Like the rifle?” So, I’m from Texas, and it’s like gun country down here, so almost everyone has a gun, my dad included. And guess what his is? Yeah, a Winchester .30-30. A tiny bit of parallel there that I thought was funny.

That wasn’t the point of my story though. The point was that, even if you don’t have a gun down here, you know about them. At least like little facts. As someone who doesn’t particularly like guns, all the knowledge I have relates to other things. Particularly a little bit of lore about the Winchester mansion in California.

If you already know about it, feel free to skip this part or correct me on details I might not have gotten right. Most fans of Supernatural have probably already covered this, since it’s sort of relatable, but I think it’s interesting, and some people might not know.

Sarah Winchester, the wife of the actual Winchester gun guy, built this house until she died. Because a psychic told her to. The psychic told her that if she ever stopped building, the victims of Winchester arms would kill her. The actual story varies a little, but this is the one I heard. Since she was freaking rich as all get-out, she was able to build a giant house that had maze-like hallways and stairs to nowhere, so that the spirits wouldn’t find her.

Just think about that in relation to Supernatural for a second, will you? Interesting, isn’t it, that Sam and Dean Winchester are Hunters of supernatural stuff, no?

I hope you enjoyed story-time, now back to the show.

“Yeah, Dean. Kind of the black sheep of the family. Handsome, though.” Oh, Dean, you’re hilarious.

Okay, at least Sam’s alive, and we know Dean is going to search until he finds him, so the only hope is that Sam won’t die before that happens. I’m so glad that Dean is smart. I know that seems like a weird thing to say, but it needs to be said. He usually lets Sam take the reins on the whole ‘smarts’ stuff, but he’s so perceptive and intelligent. I’m not just saying that because I love Dean-even though I do-I’m saying that because he underestimates himself, and so do a lot of people.

God, I’m just amazed by the amount of emotions that Dean has for Sam. That seems like a weird thing to say, I know, but it’s true.

This feels like a Saw-type game to me. Like they’re giving Jenkins a knife and ‘setting him free’ so that they can hunt him. It’s like what some people do with big game. Import it so that they can hunt it. It’s a disgusting practice, and the fact that there are two men doing this to guys they’ve captured...I can’t even...

Oh, I don’t want anything to happen to Kathleen. I really really don’t want anything to happen to her. Crap. This is terrifying. When kids get involved, shit gets real. And now they’ve got Kathleen, there’s a creepy child, and it’s actually a family. Two brothers, their father, and the girl.

Everything about this family freaks me out, can I just say that. I can’t even give examples, it’s just everything. Like, what makes a family hunt people for sport? How is that in any way normal or acceptable or anything like that. And they have a jar of teeth. A. Jar. Of. Teeth. Disgusting. I think Missy freaks me out the most.

See, the thing I like about Dean is that he does everything with the same amount of verve. He just throws himself into it. Sam is much more wily and cautious, even though he’ll put all of himself into a fight, too. But he tries not to fight, and Dean’s just like, “First I’m going to kick your ass, then I’m going to kick your ass.” That’s not real. By that I mean that there just aren’t guys out there like that. Anyway, I got off topic. The thought that really brought this blabbering on was that if the family had wanted just a straight up, balls out fight from a Winchester, they should have picked Dean. No offense to Sammy. I love him dearly, but he would try to out-think these people. Which, admittedly, would probably work, if he was given enough time.

“Eat me. No, no no no wait, you actually might.” Always a joker, Dean.

Shit. Shooting anything in a cage is...ugh, this episode is pissing me off so much. At least Sam had that bracket and got the better of the son, Lee. Now he just has to get everyone free. Great. Come on, Sam. You can do it. I know you can.

Awesome out-thinking, Sammy, even if it wasn’t on purpose. I retract my earlier statement. You’re a fucking beast, and I love you for it.

Kathleen is going to kill this guy. I just know it. She’s going to shoot him. “Just tell me why.” “Because it’s fun.” Dear God. I get why she did it, I think. She gave him an out, too, a little bit. The father...She asked him why, but when the answer you get is “because it’s fun,” you’re going to go a little off the deep end. She probably wouldn’t have shot him if he hadn’t replied that way.

“I thought it would be easier, once I knew the truth. But it isn’t, really.” There are no lines in this show that are not completely calculated, especially the ones that have to do with information.

Shit. Well, people are fucking insane, that’s all I know. Excellent episode, crazy as all get-out, freaked me out, disgusted me. Yeah, awesome episode.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 15: The Benders (SPOILER BLOG)

Is it just me or is this the creepiest episode ever?

I know Sam and Dean fight some pretty terrifying monsters who do disgusting, violent things to people, but this episode might be the most horrifying in a lot of ways. It’s one thing when a monster kills someone because it’s hungry or a spirit kills for revenge. Even Max in “Nightmare” was a human who killed people because he was abused. It’s another thing entirely for a human to hunt another human for fun.

In Dean’s words, demons I get. People are crazy. Like I’ve said before, most demons know they’re total assholes. They accept it. They do what they do because they are literally the spawn of hell and they’re usually just following orders anyway. They definitely enjoy killing and making deals and calling hell-hounds, etc. but in the end, it’s part of their make up. It’s what they do. Humans have a choice, so when humans make choices like the ones seen in this episode... I don’t know. It’s worse, somehow, than what demons or spirits do.

Dean’s little version of “Sophie’s Choice” made me shudder even though I knew what was going to happen. It reminds me of when we had to do those brainteasing exercises in middle school where you’d get a description of ten people and you’re supposed to save five based on how beneficial they are to the world. It’s a tough choice for Dean, but I think he makes the right one: Sam knows how to fight and could probably hold his own until Dean figured a way out and could help him. Still, Dean should know by now that you don’t make deals with monsters. They never keep their end, or if they do, it’s never the way you think.

Since I am not an “eye-for-an-eye” type of person, I don’t like the fact that the cop shoots the father at the end. I obviously understand why she does it, and I could never say what I would do until I was in a situation like that, but it seems wrong somehow. I guess I shouldn’t talk, because that’s exactly what Sam and Dean are doing: hunting down the demon that killed their mother, but I guess in a lot of ways that’s more for answers and closure than for revenge (in Dean’s case. Sam probably wants revenge for Jess. Poor angry Sam.) I think Sam should listen to what she says about how it isn’t easier once you know the truth. It might help him focus on what really matters about the demon, rather than letting his anger get in the way.

Final thought: People are crazy. Yep. That’s about it.

Liz Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 14: Nightmare (SPOILER BLOG)

AHHH. WE’RE HERE. IT’S THIS EPISODE. I feel like this is where everything really begins. The boys have been messing around hunting wendigos and spirits and shit... here be the real meat of the Supernatural storyline. Azazel’s children.

Honestly, I don’t remember everything happening so quickly. We’re only a little over halfway through Season 1 and it’s like SAM’S POWERS ARE HERE.

A couple notes about the first time I watched this episode: 1) I was convinced that Jared Padalecki’s character was actually Dean and I kept mixing them up. Damn you Gilmore Girls. I kept referring to Sam as Dean to my friend and he was like, “You mean Sam?” I’m dumb. 2) This was the first episode where I had to look away when someone died because of how violent and realistic it was. It’s one thing to like, bleed from your eyes or be ganked by a scarecrow... that stuff is supernatural by definition. It’s another thing entirely to be IMPALED BY A WINDOWSILL. That kind of stuff makes me never want to stick my head out of a window again.

I would like to better understand the significance of the two shots in the beginning right after Sam tells Dean they have to leave the motel. There’s a close up of two desk lamps, one lit and one not, then a close up of the headlights on the Impala in the same fasion, one lit and one not. I think this could possibly be foreshadowing the light and dark of Dean and Sam, respectively. In the grand scheme, Dean is supposed to be the light, the Sword of Michael, the angel’s vessel, and Sam is the dark, Lucifer’s meatsuit. I might be reading WAY too far into this, but I just found it interesting.

Augh, the anguish in Sam’s face when he realizes that his mother died the same way Max’s did. I feel like this is the beginning of the end for Sam, in a way. Right now, he can have hope that being “chosen” is a good thing, that he and Max were chosen to help people. In reality, of course, they were chosen to be Azazel’s children and to eventually battle each other for the right to raise hell to Earth. Damn Azazel. You are ruining my bb Sam’s dreams and I hate you.

Part of me feels very warm and happy at the fact that the vision of Dean dying made Sam strong enough to move the cabinet. The other part of me knows that it’s all very innocent now, but this does not lead to good things. I am also very relieved that Sam acknowledges that his dad is not the worst father in the world and that as much as John was manic in his search for Mary’s killer, he never physically hurt them, and its an important distinction. I don’t like John, but he’s not the worst father imaginable.

Final thought: “As long as I’m around, nothing bad’s gonna happen to you.” DEAN IS THE BEST BIG BROTHER EVER.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 14: Nightmare

I’m guessing we’re going to learn a little more about Sam’s Shining? That’s my only guess for this one, except that I’ll be scared out of my wits. My nightmares usually consist of people chasing me. Hunting me, if you will. And at least one person dies. I have really scary nightmares. Once, I had one that was all abstract art. Like the actual nightmare was abstract. Someone was chasing me and I was trying to escape and it was scary.

I don’t like that Sam can see people dying in his dreams, and that it’s apparently real. This is creepy.

See, I would believe this was a suicide if we hadn’t seen how confused he was and how the locks on the car went down without him actually doing it.

Oh, dear jeebus. Priests?! What. The. Fuck. Sam and Dean, what is WRONG with you two! Sam’s faces. Amazing. Just wow.

Max is sitting alone in a corner, not looking upset at all? It was him. Totally Max. Maybe that’s jumping the gun a bit, but I don’t think so. But why would he kill his Dad? What’s his deal?

Sam’s having legit premonitions now? He’s never had them before, though, right? Why now? What’s bringing them on now?

Yeah, something’s up with Max. he seems like he’s just trying to make them go away. Oh. Max’s mom isn’t really his mom. She’s his stepmother. And his dad was a drunk, and the uncle was violent, too. So Max is getting revenge on them? Telekinesis? Da fuck! I mean, telekinesis is cool, but wow. He must be pretty powerful.

Sam is connected to Max? Why? Just because they’re both psychic? That doesn’t seem like enough of an explanation. Why him? Why specifically Max? His mom died in his nursery in a fire?!

Oh, dear God. It’s Mary all over again. The same thing killed her. I can’t even...I guess that would explain it the connection. Max is going to turn bad, though. He’s going to destroy himself or something. Like the powers. They’re going to destroy him. That could happen to Sam, couldn’t it. No question about it. That could happen to Sam, too.

What the hell just happened. Oh, Sam had another vision. Of Dean dying. And he moved the dresser in front of the door. Go save your brother, Sammy!

His powers are progressing like Max’s. But he can’t do that. He’s not the same person as Max, though, and that’s the thing I’ll have to remind myself of in coming episodes, I think. Sam’s powers are going to keep progressing, so there’s always going to be a chance that Sam could destroy himself.

Dean’s scared, but he’s hiding it because he knows that they can’t both be scared. One of them has to be in control, and it’s not going to be Sam, so Dean’s got to step up. What an awesome older brother.

Sarah Watches: Supernatural Season 1, Episode 13: Route 666

It’s one of my worst fears that I’ll be driving at night and someone will crash into me and no one will find my dead body until morning. Is that weird? Probably. But I think it’s a fairly valid fear, since for about 6 months I was driving on dark Vermont roads every other weekend. Yeah...

Sam definitely has a right to be mad that Dean told Cassie the family secret, but I’m not sure that Cassie and Dean weren’t together for longer. I guess we’ll see, hm? But yeah, her face when she saw him? Awful and depressing, and there was something like relief on her face, seeing Dean. Like they were more to each other than Dean was letting on. But I could be wrong. It’s happened before, it’ll happen again.

Could Cassie be the mayor’s daughter? Is that what he’s suggesting?

And some kind of phantom truck that’s pissed and racist and connected to Cassie...I’m not sure what to think.

Dean is such an interesting character. He doesn’t like to show weakness or talk about his feelings or any ‘sissy’ stuff, but I’m starting to think that maybe he feels ‘more’ than Sam does. I mean intensity-wise, not quantity-wise. Dean puts up a front because he’s more wounded than he’ll ever admit, while Sam’s only front is around Dean. It’s interesting...

Um, okay. Unexpected angry emotion-spilling...*nods* yeah...

Okay, so I still don’t understand why the truck thing killed the mayor, who wasn’t driving, and tried to kill Cassie, who was in her house. What do they have to do with it? And what’s the connection with the Dorian family, or at least Cyrus Dorian?

Jesus. This episode...I can’t even begin to talk about it. I’m never sure what to think about this type of situation. Martin killing Cyrus after being beaten by him...I can only imagine what was going through Martin’s head at that point in time, and what was going on in everyone’s minds when they kept the whole thing secret for 40 years.

TROLOLOL Sam’s face when Dean and Cassie are kissing in front of him. Hilarious. I love this show.

Okay. Cassie/Dean is not something I ship. I was trying to be open-minded about them together, but no. She probably won’t be back, and I’m not heartbroken. Dean loved her more than she loved him, and that would never have been a good relationship for either of them to be in. Unsatisfying and unfulfilling. And Dean deserves more than that.
