OH. Oh oh. OH NO. I do NOT like this episode. Not one bit. I do not like skinwalkers. Seriously. They creep the hell out of me. That scene where we seen Dean changing into the skinwalker’s natural form... ugh. It makes me shudder. Although this episode does do a pretty good job of making us feel sorry for him. He was obviously rejected by society and driven into hiding, which explains why he is so angry. He just wants to be loved. Of course, this doesn’t give him permission to go killing other people’s loved ones, but it does shift the blame a little.
One thing I caught at the beginning of the episode was Sam emailing his college friends. I immediately thought of Azazel... what if some of Azazel’s demons who posed as Sam’s friends are still keeping in contact with him? Keeping track? Just more proof that at this point, the boys can’t trust anybody but each other.
Dean’s ~~emotions~~ are a big focus of this episode as well. We’ve obviously gotten a glimpse into Sam’s psyche, as he tends to wear his emotions on his sleeve, even if he professes not to want to talk about things. We did see some Dean emotion in the last episode in the form of his fear of flying, but Shifter!Dean’s conversation with Sam really reveals a lot about Dean’s self-esteem. Throughout the entire series, we see Dean having such a blind faith in his father, a dedication that prevents him from ever making any changes. Sam doesn’t have this devotion, so he was able to get out and at least try to have a normal life. And now Dean has abandonment issues. He really is such a tragic character.
I also love that Dean is actually a huge nerd. Way to make a Star Trek reference. Love you, bb.
First acknowledgement of the necklace? I haven’t been paying attention to it in the last five episodes, but this is definitely the first time we are really made aware of its existence.
Final thoughts: The Winchesters can be very smart sometimes, but other times they are straight up idiots (or idjits, as Bobby would say). When dealing with a monster who can shed his skin and become anyone he wants, what should you not do? SPLIT UP. And what’s the first thing they do? SPLIT UP. Oh well. At least Sam knows Dean well enough to catch little slips. Don’t mess with the Winchesters.
